The name ‘Penny Plain’ was chosen after the Victorian toy theatres which were sold as cut-out books ‘a penny plain or tuppence coloured’. Based in Grassington, a beautiful village in the Yorkshire Dales, they had their debut at the famous Grassington Festival and continue to tour the country with their custom built version of a Victorian travelling theatre booth. In the guise of “Hardcastle’s Mighty Excelsior Theatre Company" they show the misadventures and mishaps of a group of down and out players trying to stage some dramatic offerings, whislt educating young and old regarding the historic theatre culture of yesteryear.

The company approached me for their VI development. I also thoroughly enjoyed designing their Tom Lee production poster, particularly the background which I made by hand - burning corners and areas of the paper and staining the stock with tea, for the resulting 'dated' effect.
